As most Switchies know, Opus by Kepler155c has become one of the most prominent OSes on SwitchCraft. Someone brought up having a "Shared Opus Installation" (I forgot who) to save space, as Opus is pretty large. And considering the number of people that use Opus (at least 100 installs on SwitchCraft, definitely more), this would take up a considerable amount of space on the server.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions on how to implement this? Critiques? Because I am an idiot. Because this is a bad idea.

Not sure if Opus supports running in ROM but you could try that. Users could opt into it with a startup file which runs its launcher.

You might be able to add a PR to the github that does what this for MBS does: https://github.com/SquidDev-CC/mbs/pull/14

Here are some statistics on this that I am stealing from Lemmmy (the switchcraft server admin who has broken every single rule) (who stole them from Yemmel):
421,974 out of 590,988 files are opus
1,922 computers out of 21,808 (13,597 on filesystem) have Opus OS installed
2.9 GiB out of 4.3 GiB of the server's computer directory is Opus OS

Extremely late to this, but worth noting that we eventually switched to using ZFS with dedup enabled for just the computer directory, and our dedup ratio was 5.55x, which was a pretty big success I'd say. Most of that was PotatOS and Opus OS.

We kept this ZFS dedup system going forward for SC3
